Hi there. I just bought an external firewire drive for use with the 002. There is only one Firewire 400 port on the back. Should I connect the drive to the back on the 002? Anyone else doing this? I have noticed that the drive isn't recognized until the 002 is linked when it is done this way, but If I like the drive first and the 002 after, I get some erros during playback. any suggestions? should I get a firewire hub of some kind?

There's also a firewire port on the front of your G5. Use this for one of your items.

If you do connect both devices to the same port, the drive always goes before the 002. The 002 should always be last in the chain, as mentioned in the Getting Started with 002 and 002 Rack Guide. The extra FW ports on the 002 can be used for low level tasks like charging a digital camera...

Macintosh Configuration

Connecting Digi 002 or Digi 002 Rack to the Computer

Connecting FireWire Drives

Connect FireWire hard drives directly to a
FireWire port on your computer. Do not connect
a FireWire hard drive to the second
FireWire port on the back panel of Digi 002 or
Digi 002 Rack because the FireWire ports do not
pass audio data when the unit is powered off.

To connect a FireWire hard drive:

If your computer has more than one FireWire
port, connect the FireWire hard drive to one
FireWire port on the computer, and connect
Digi 002 or Digi 002 Rack to another FireWire
port on the computer.

– or –
If your computer has only one FireWire port,
connect the FireWire hard drive directly to your
computer and then connect Digi 002 or
Digi 002 Rack to an available FireWire port on
the drive.

While it is possible to connect a FireWire
hard drive to an available port on Digi 002
or Digi 002 Rack if either unit is powered
off, any mounted FireWire drives will lose
their data connection with the computer.
This may result in hard drive errors or data
loss.

Connecting Other FireWire Devices to
Digi 002 or Digi 002 Rack

The second FireWire port on the Digi 002 unit is
available for daisy-chaining FireWire devices
such as digital cameras or digital video recorders.
Even when it is powered off, Digi 002 supplies
power from the computer through its
FireWire ports, letting you recharge batteries in
other FireWire devices.

you would do better if you bought a separate pci firewire card for your system - 002 and firewire hard drive in same firewire buss means trouble in panther, for the currently unknown reason apple hasn't been able to fix completely. firewire was much better in jaguar, but in panther there seems to be no other way to make your system reliable enough than to use your firewire devices in different firewire busses (and no, different ports don't necessarily mean different buss. just buy the pci card, it's inexpensive compared to productivity loss you will otherwise encounter at some point.)
