Default Whats the go with Protools HD upgrade pricing??

Protools HD7 to HD10 = $2500.
Protools HD8 to HD11 = $1500.

...yet a copy of protools HD7 costs $250 to buy and includes a free upgrade to HD8.

Is it some kind of sick joke? Or... them being cheeky? ...or perhaps just an indication of how slap dash the upgrade policy of put together?

If you are currently running an older rig, its very likely that you will need to start from scratch anyway(many older Macs won't work, you will need to update the OS, turning back may be impossible), so your best bet is(most likely) to buy a new or late-model computer and sell the old package as a "turn-key" rig to offset the cost(and just buy the new software outright). Just an opinion

Back in the HD7/HD8 days, that's what HD upgrades cost. This price simply reflects that. They won't retroactively go back and jack up the price just for the heck of it.

The HD7/HD8 upgrade prices to HD10 were specifically designed as an incentive to have people instead do the hardware upgrades to HDX.

Motivation aside... there must be some people with some very dense substances between the ears working at Avid if they are going to offer essentially the same thing for two rather different prices.

Say I own HD7 and want HD10. What do you do?

Drop $2500? Heck no.

Throw my old ilok in the bin... purchase HD7 for $250... get a free update to HD8 then purchase the $1500 update to HD10.

It isn't a small disparity in pricing. We are talking $750 difference, with the same result. Going from HD7 to HD10.

What exactly is the point? Why not just play fair in the first place and price the HD7 update to HD10 at $1750?

Yeah, the upgrade prices starting with 10 made absolutely no sense. Don't try to make sense of it because it made absolutely no sense even when Pro Tools 10 was released. Their prices were like this:

HD Prices:
Pro Tools 9-10 = $1000
Pro Tools 8-10 = $1500
Pro Tools 7-10 = $2500

Yet the upgrades between the versions were like this:
7-8 = $250
8-9 = $350
9-10 = $1000

Certainly the cost of all those upgrades does not add up to $2500.

I was one of the lucky people who bought Pro Tools 9 the day 10 came out and got to go from 8 - 9 with a free 10 upgrade for only $350. The faithful owners of Pro Tools 9 had to pay $1000 for their upgrade to 10. Yeah, it made no sense. The key is to be aware when the releases happen to make sure you don't get burned.
