Default intermittent digital crackles /sparks from 192 i/o

For the past few months ive had intermittent digital crackles /sparks from my 192 i/o. Some sessions have the crackle sound from all 8 outputs of my 192 i/o. I have my 192 hard wired into a soundcraft Ghost console. Its an ugly experience being blasted with all 8 channels spraying digital junk. Ill close the session open another one.. and NO crackle . Close that session and re open the offending one.. and the crackle returns the instant i press the spacebar. the crackle appears even when there is no audio regions on the channel /track..
to try and work around the problem.
I tried e re assigning the stereo mix outputs to different i/o outputs on the sessions that have the digital crackle and have been able to move the stereo mix to different outputs i.e 3/4 5/6 7/8 and it comes out clean .???

I mentioned this problem to my producer friend and he said it my " Word clock.. mind you i have a stand alone 192 i/o using the internal clock.

HELP! HELP HELP HELP

i reallly dont want to send my 192 back to digi and pay $$$ if this is a software / preference/ clock? problem.

Do i need to trash something?

my system . pro tools 8.0.3 snow leopard (the crackle has been there since tiger)
hd2 pci e
192 i/o
mido i/o
mac pro 2 x 3ghz intel xenon
snow Leopard 10.6.2

Hi,

So is this happening on every session or just some sessions?

This kind of crackle can often be caused by RTAS overloads!! so do you have RTAS plugins in this session? usually RTAS VI's are renown for being CPU hogs and causing CPU overloads which cause similar symptoms to what you describe. check your CPU meter when you get the problem and see if the meter is showing any peaks.

Another possible cause can be an incompatible or out of date plugin! so make sure ALL your plugins are up to date.

Make sure in your hardware setup that you haven't got any digital inputs selected!! if you have digital inputs assigned in the hardware setup and there is nothing connected to the inputs you can get clocking problems and that will cause similar symptoms.

Have you run Digitest? its in the pro tools folder in applications/system drive. running this will test all your cards and see if there are any problems.

Hmm. . . Sparks? I'd be worried

Seriously. . . 1) word clock routing issues, 2) re-seating of the mini jumpers on HD cards, and 3) RTAS plugin issues are the 3 things that first come to mind. I have experienced them all. . . If it is big noise in a bunch of places all at once, I would lean toward the 2nd item. . . . and yes close protools, trash the usual files (Minimum of the Database and Volumes Folders, and you may need to trash more), empty your trash and restart would be the first thing to try. You know about the tool for that right? It is a sticky note at the top of this section of the DUC.

Some other questions
1) Do you see the crackling noise on the meters within ProTools?
2) Did you happen to have a problem session open with ProTools 7.4 and then open it with ProTools 8.0, without trashing (or visa versa)?
3) Are you using a bunch of Waves plugins? Which version of Waves/ProTools?
4) Did you take a session that was acting up and remove all the plugins from it? Do you still have the same crackling noise problem?
5) Are you trashing any files now, to try and trouble shoot?

thanks for your speedy response.

" Seriously. . . 1) word clock routing issues,"

your response led me to solve the problem. i hope.

I went to set up > playback engine sample rate > 48 khz

Then when opening a new session "create Blank" somehow the default in the parameters menu was changed to 44 khz. this mismatching seems to be the crackle inducer. seems obvious right?

please tell that to the guy that had me on the phone for 2 hours!!!!! at digidesign customer support.
and to think I was reccomended to send my 192 back to digi for diagnostics on a bad 192 i/o card ?? and not a mention of checking my sample rate settings.

Now i have to sift thru sessions that are mismatched.

hope this is the fix..

thanks again !

would this

Unless you have somehow set your session to run on external clock! then it wouldn't make any difference what frequency you started the session at! its not possible to open a 48k session at 44.1. as mentioned the only way these frequency problems arise is when a session was clocked to an external clock at a different frequency!

So i'm afraid its not the obvious answer to your problems! unless your somehow set to external clock sync.

Hi,

I've had this very problem, random spikes and horrific major spiking across all channels at once, and my hd192 was also routed to a Soundcraft Ghost however it wasn't a spirit in the machine. In my case I took the lid off the 192 and reseated the input cards (I have the 16 input set) I also did the usual problem solvers mentioned above and reinstalled pro tools itself between those three things the problem went away.

Good luck

It was a simple fix! thanks for the helpful responses.

I pulled out my a/d output cards and after carefully re-seating them... no more crackles and sparky digital junk. all is well. Sorry for my rants.

happy holidays
