Default hard drive woes

the eternal HD I have been saving my sessions to is suddenly locked. Read Only. When I try to Record enable the drive in Workspace, it tells me that the HD cannot be designated as an Audio Record Volume because it is locked. There is no option to unlock it in the drive's Get Info window and disk utility can't do anything with it either. It was working fine yesterday... What gives?

a) check it w/ Disk Utility
b) Disk Warrior
c) copy off (if you don't all ready have the standard 2 copes) and reformat
