Default Check CD error rate

Hello to everyone out there!

I've got a question concerning mastering:

What do you think is the best way to ensure that a master CD-R (which shall be sent to
the copy factory) is free of errors (e.g. drop-outs etc.)? Do you know a software which
can do this? My way in the past was to playback the whole CD in my standard CD player. But
this takes up a great deal of time. Perhaps you know a better (faster/more detailed) way to
find errors on a master CD?!?

If you burn it using redbook authoring software, I usually burn copies at 1x,4x,8x and the fastest that the burner will do. Send ALL of those to the duplicator.

What are you using to burn the CD's, wavelab or CD architect etc?

Youo shouldnt have errors on a disc using a program like that, also. You will find that the program will reject the disc rather than burn errors etc.

I think this is the info your talking about: here

This is high end stuff and most casual and trained ears will never hear it, but in duplication, it can be crucial.

You should always take a listen to the disc before sending it off...even though it takes up to 80 minutes to pull it off.

I (and many other ME's) pretty much stick to plextor drives and the plextools software for quality control error checking.

In order for a cd to remain red book compliant, it must have less than a 220 max BLER (E11+E21+E31), and no E32 errors.

Most mastering engineers apply far more stringent rules than what is considered acceptable by red book standards to their quality control.

Has anyone ever compared a disk burned by Masterlink ML9600 to see if it meets redbook standards?

That depends on a lot of factors...namely the medium. It can produce a red book cd...but honestly, the masterlinks converters are pretty horrible and it's SRC is simply dreadful. I'd probably burn with a no-name internal drive comp-usa special before opting to burn with a masterlink.

First, I'd like to thank all of You for these helpful hints.
Normally, I use Wavelab for burning CDs (which uses the
Roxio CD engine, I think). But the Plextor tools are
a very good hint which I'll try out. Nevertheless there
won't be any CDs sent to the duplicator which I haven't listened
completely before.

Wavelab uses it's own engine and set of burner drivers.
