Default Probs with Xpand!... not all notes playing back

Hi folks... I've recorded some midi using an Xpand! patch played with an Axion 25 into my 003r on 7.4.2... when I recorded the track, everything was fine - I could hear all the notes as I played them... but for some reason, whenever I play the track back, only some of the notes are audible. It seems to be the same group of notes that are missing... I can see them on the midi track, but there's no audio for those specific notes. Although I'm a newbie to PT (and especially midi) I have been able to successfully record midi stuff in the past, so I’m confused.

Also, if I solo the midi track, I can still hear the vox & lead guitar playing back too. No doubt I'm missing something very obvious here, but I can't see the wood for the trees at the minute.

Any guidance is much appreciated - thanks!

No sample player has limitless voices, you need to check that voices for other sounds are not been stolen, very easy with big layered sounds.

You can reduce the number of voices in some of the other sounds that are stealing the voices - my money is on that.

Thanks for the quick reply... I'm not entirely sure what you mean by "stealing voices".

This is a very small session... I have 8 (acoustic) drum tracks, 1 x electric bass guitar, 1 x rhthym guitar & one main vocal. I am using only 1 midi track (it's the Xpand grand piano eco patch). So far, I haven't added any other midi tracks.

OK in every sound module (even Virtual ones) there is a finite number of voices the player can sound at anyone time, for example Mini Grand has a maxium number of voices which is 64. I'm not sure about Xpand2, I'll check with the guys over at AIR, but most likely 64, or 128.

Now this seems fairly simple, but the next thing to consider is that some sounds may layer several samples to get the patch, this could mean for example: a synth may use 3 voices per note, therefore you need to multiply how many voices are being used by 3, so 5 notes becomes 15.

As I say I'm not entirely sure but will check with AIR, but that's the normal reason. You can allocate voices in Xpand, so things like bass you can give 1-2 max as they are normally mono.

Alternatively have you inadvertantly muted them in the new MIDI edit window; see Phil Jackson on this here http://www.digidesign.com/index.cfm?...0&itemid=27606

Thanks Russ...

I'm running Xpand! (I don't have Xpand2).

Also, the drums, guitar & bass are real instruments - not midi.

The midi piece I played was very basic - no chords, just a few notes... no more than 2 notes at any one time (which is about the limit of my keyboard playing ability - I'm actually a drummer)

Thanks again

Did you quantize it, sometimes that can do weird things.

Can you zip up the session and send it to me via usendit? I'll take a look, or for that matter just export the MIDI track and email me with it [email protected]

Didn't quantize... just played it via the Axiom

I'm away from the studio till tomorrow (I'm in Ireland) so will send the midi file to you then.

BTW, how do I just export midi?... I've bounced & emailed mp3s many times before, but never just midi info.

Thanks

OK I've taken a look at your session and you seem to be having the same problem as other users - are you using a USB keyboard?

Yip - I'm using an Axiom 25... I'm not having the same issues with IK Philharmonic Classic
