Default Updating a Mbox Mini 3

Hello and thank you for any help in advance.

My son has an Mbox 3 Mini running on a mid 2010 Macbook pro. He needs to upgrade the OS to either El Capitan or Sierra because some programs are no longer working. The update drivers page content are below but I can't understand them. Can anyone please help and tell me what is the most advanced Max OS I can put on his computer that will support his hardware? What is the procedure to up date? DO I need a new version of protools? Just drivers? It seems to suggest that I can update to sierra?

Thank you!

If you go with Sierra (10.12), you will need a minimum version of Pro tools 12.6. If you want to run an older version of PT, have a look at this page for compatibility info:
