Default iLok and External Drive

I am wondering if I run Pro Tools from a separate external drive from my computer, can I plug my iLok (first generation usb) into my computer or do I need to plug it into the external hard drive for it to authorize? Thank you!

Pro Tools (and any program) should be installed to the system hard drive/partition (C:).

Sometimes apps will run from a different drive, but you are possibly setting yourself up for problems with the registry (on Windows)

Recording to a separate, non-OS hard drive is a good idea though, but put the actual application on your C: drive.

To answer the question, your iLok plugs into a USB port on the computer.

I am going to run PT 9 from a bootable external hard drive with Lion installed, since my Macbook Pro has Yosemite and isn't compatible with PT 9. I am wondering if the license will be recognized from the usb connection on my computer or do I need to connect my iLok directly to the external hard drive that doesn't have a regular usb port?

As Benoni says any usb port on your computer will do the job.
