In 2019.6 clicking and creating a selection across multiple tracks in the timeline defaults to ‘clips in tracks’. This behaviour makes sense to me. It seems the only way to get the drop down selection to change to ‘tracks’ is by clicking on a track name label.
Now, in PT 2020.12, after creating a clip group, the colour picker drop down flips from ‘clips in tracks’ to ‘tracks’, and picking a colour now obviously changes the colour of the track - not just the clip group in question. In order to change the colour of the clip group, I now have the added steps of selecting elsewhere on the timeline, then reselecting my clip group in order to get the drop down menu to once again read ‘clips in tracks’. Was this change in behaviour deliberate? For my workflow it’s become a PITA as I used to create a clip group (single track or across multiple tracks) and then assign it a colour right away via a keystroke macro. This new behaviour started in some version of PT 2020, but has recently begun to stick in my craw as work has picked up. Can it be changed back, please? Anyone else notice this change?

Yes, the behavior changed in version 2020.9. This is the version where also the About page changed to the new color scheme with the black background. I don't know if it had something to do with it.
I agree, it makes more sense from a workflow point of view that the Color Inspector sticks with "Clips in Tracks" after you create a Clip Group.. So maybe it is a bug worth reporting
