I'm brand new to Mac, I just got an iMac 5K 2017 i5 8GB 1TB FD 3.4GHz from a windows 7 6core AMD with 24GB RAM, and reading about the FD is scaring me lol, my iMac is still in the box and it has me thinking on sending it back to upgrade to i7 and SSD...

My take on the group wisdom is 15% would say "open it up." 85% would say take it back and do that.

Hey

Fusion drives are NOT a great option with PT and 8GB is 8GB less than recommended so send ot back and get a SSD drive 1TBand 16GB minimum, preferably 32GB if possible. But that fusion drive gotta go man. Believe me and others here, you will have issues not worth the agrevation.

i5 is not what I would pa.y for today as i7 is what you want for future proof. i5 works for some but IMHO too underpowered for audio work. Especially with Pro Tools. She is a demanding woman.

Even if the poster opens up that iMac and changes the FD to an ssd he'll still be stuck with the i5. No way for an end user to change that out.

What's amazing is I've read several posts over on MacRumors forums where people actually talk about Fusion drives being the bee's knees an dhow to cobble one together with separate ssd and spinner drives.

Specs in signature -

I've been using this iMac as my main machine for 4 years - it has a fusion drive and an i7. I've never experienced any errors associated with the FD. I'm one of the lucky ones who's system seems to just 'work'.

*Except recently with 12.8.2 - GUI lag etc..

You're really dancing with the devil on your machine - High Sierra on a Fusion drive machine and PT12.8.2 - better you than me

hahaha

I don't usually upgrade so soon - but I don't have any projects on at the minute. So I thought i'll jump in the deep end to see if it helps with GUI lag - it didn't.

In all honesty i've never had any problems or issues with my fusion drive. It just works, like I mentioned 12.8 and .1 were rock solid for me, the best OS/APP pair up since 11.3.2

I know some people have trouble with fusion drives, but I've never seen what the fuss is about.
