Default Info request: Black Lion mod for PMIX

I've heard good reviews about this in other threads. Can someone shed some light on:

  1. What it does, why it would my make M-powered setup a happy camper
  2. How to get one
  3. What you paid
  4. Where to find a deal like yours or a better one
  5. Alternatives, if any

All of the info you request (along with audio clips) is at Black Lion Audio's website. That being said, I'm not sure about this mod in particular - but all of the mods that BLA has done for myself and for friends have made a *noticeable* difference. Not the kind where you have to convince yourself it's different - but a real, true, honest to goodness difference.

I'm about to have this done soon. I'm set for September 8th. I'm sending mine out
on the 3rd. I'm going to be recording some clips today and/or Sunday for a future
before/after examples as there are none specific to the PM I/O.

Pretty much, you just email them and tell them you want the mod. Someone will
reply and they set you up with down payment via PayPal. Once your payment has
cleared, they schedule and reserve a day for you. They send you a confirmation
email and you D/L and print a shipping form that you throw in the box. You ship it
to them 3-5 days before your appointment. When it's done, they bill you for the
other 50% and they ship it back via UPS.

When mine is done, I will reply and update you with some sound clips.

I've had my modded PMIX for about a year. I love it. The depth of the stereo field is pretty stunning. It's just clear, wide and deep.

The mic pre's are bigger sounding.

The BL guys are unique bunch and provide an excellent service to allow people like us to have great sound in our studios.

That would be great. Given that it isn't an inexpensive mod, Black Audio should post PMIX samples on their site to help folks considering taking the plunge.

All the best with yours!

Just out of curiosity, how long does it take them to do the mod?
How much gain do the pres have afterwards? I'm sure they give
you the info on the new specs no?

Cool Re: Info request: Black Lion mod for PMIX

Hi Guys.....read a lot about the ProjectMix BLA Mod from the website & other threads, from the votes of confidence here; i gather its worth a try but my only concern would be compatibility with future M-Audio firmware updates; would this pose a problem?

The mods they do only affect the analog I/O and the converters. Firmware
updates are for FW chipsets and the control surface. Basically everything else. Mind you I'm no expert on the matter. I believe upgrading to Leopard
requires a firmware update and there have got to be folks here that have
had updates that could comment.

But my opinion is that you are safe with this mod regarding firmware
updates and BLA would tell you up front if it were otherwise.

I'm in the Chicago area so I dropped it off and picked it up from their shop. The actual work took one week.

As for gain on the pre's I'm not sure how much but it's more. I don't have to push the pre's as hard to get my RCA 77 ribbon in the game.

Just received notification. My mod is done and confirmed my payment.
I have a tracking number and my baby is on her way home. I expect
it either Monday or Tuesday.

I also recorded acoustic guitar, and direct guitar and bass. Sorry I had
no access to a full drum kit,or the mics to record if I did. I have everything
written down and a simple setup. When she arrives I will set up,record
and post some clips.

btw it arrived on September 4th and was scheduled for the 8th,so they may have
started the work early. Otherwise 4 days is pretty damn good time.
