Phantom power on the mbox2

I'm a new to the mbox2, and i'm running pro tools le on a powerbook g4. I have recorded audio from the mbox to protools successfully as long as i'm not using a phantom powered mic. when i do use a phantom powered mic, i plug the mic in, and as it says in the mbox instructions i hit the 48v button on the box (thus enabling phantom power to both imputs 1&2) but within seconds of hitting the 48v button the mbox2 turns off and resets itself. pro tools then tells me that i have to quit the program because it has lost the connection to the mbox

i SUSPECT that i am somehow overloading the mbox when the phantom power is turned on, therefor overloading it and forcing to to reset. but my mic imput (plugged into line 1 set on the mic setting not DI) has the gain at 0!!!! so how the [bleep] am i overlaoding it.

i would really appreciate some help. i'm a pc user for a good 19 years. and i love the macs for audio and video... but i'm starting to get very frustrated....
