Default NEED urgent help: CPU usage x buffer size

Hi friends!
Next week I will be recording the fourth Cd of a local Camerata Orchestra, I will try to do it all inside PT, 5.1.1, G4 800, 2 IDE 40GB drives and 2 ADAT XTs with 6 Tapes just in case of crash.

I will not record more than 12 tracks, but will do 5 versions for 14 songs, draining around 25.2GB at 24bit/44.1k,total of 70 songs assuming each song going up to 4 minutes. Seems to be a good estimative...

I need your advices on this:

a) It is suggested that while recording we set
CPU usage=85% and Buffer size at 512. For reproduction/mixdown, CPU usage=60% and Buffer size =1024.

I have a PT24 on a G4 800. Of course with Quick punch DAE asked for more memory. I bought additional an 256MB. I will not use quickpunch at the external recording.

a) What are your opinions about CPU setting, buffersize and G4 memory along with my PT24 (poor but good) system?

b) anything else that I should do to avoid problems?

c) In which menu I get rid of that annoying Indexing that the MAC OS sometimes dos in the middle of a session?

Hope to hear from you as soon as possible
Nice weekend
thanks

about the indexing it is some thing caming from SHERLOCK

so in the finder use search

and then go to the preference of SHERLOCK

you will see the indexing menu

switch it to never or on shut down.

regarding your question

if you are recording only 12 tracks

I will not change any thing in these setups.

May be some others will but.

any way have a good session.

I am so stressed and crazy about this storage nightmare that I am making a very stupid test: while I read at the DUC, etc I am recording 9 to 11 tracks inside Pt, 4 minutes long. A little latency to go rec ready, but oka. I am oon the 35th "blank song" and it is functioning.

At their first CD, in 97, my old good Dm800 crashed twice with the damn Jaz drives. Then I moved to ADATs. Now, going back to HD recording.

anyone else with tips to help me?
thanks for all your patience out there!

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial">

The H/W Buffer Size and CPU Usage values effect the performance of host processing tasks such as RTAS, HTDM and DirectConnect plug-ins. Therefore, you need not worry about these settings if you do not plan to track using any of these plug-ins.

As for RAM allocation, set the Preferred size of DAE to 90MB (90000k) and the Preferred size of PT to 80MB (80000k). Leave the Minimum memory sizes for each at their default.

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial">Set your Energy Saver Control Panel to "Never".

If the computer is not going to be online, then you may disable AppleTalk.

yes, Brent no internet access never, just for tracking around 70 songs of the orchestra + choir at a maximum of 12 tracks, during 18 hours of recording, distributed between thursday, friday and saturday.

Hope no crashes.

I am installing a second IDE drive today. Any problem making round robin between MAC G$ internal drive and this MAxtro 7200RPM second bay spare drive?
Thanks again

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial">You should not run into any problems. Just make sure that both ATA drives have been formatted with Apple Drive Setup.
