Default External Hard drive issue appears now and again

Hey everyone,

I have only just started recording so i'm new to this. I have an external firewire hard drive to record my audio to. It has all the proper requirements for use with Pro Tools LE 8.

It does work fine with recording audio, which is great! However, sometimes when I want to create a session or open a previous session, this message appears:

"This session is saved on a volume set to "Transfer"
only.
If permitted, set the volume(s) in question to
"P" (Playback) or "R" (record) in the Workspace."

To stop this popping up, I have to reformat the hard drive by going into Disk Utility on my Mac. I then select the external hard drive from the list, go to the "Erase" tab, change the name of the external hard drive and finally click the "Erase" button. This makes everything work again but it also means that I lose everything on the external hard drive.

The volume format of the external hard drive is always set as "Mac OS Extended (Journaled), as it should be.

I'm just wondering if there's any other settings that I should configure to stop this from happening?

"This session is saved on a volume set to "Transfer"
only.
If permitted, set the volume(s) in question to
"P" (Playback) or "R" (record) in the Workspace."
- do I have to change the volume from "Transfer" to "Playback" or "Record"? If so, how do I do it? :S

Thanks guys,
Matt.

It sounds like PT thinks you are trying to transfer files from a CD or DVD.

Try this:
(from PT 8 ref)

To make Transfer files playable in the current
session:
1 Choose Window > Project.
2 Double-click the Audio Files folder to display
all of the audio files.
3 Choose Select Transfer Files from the Browser
menu.
4 Choose Copy and Relink from the Browser
menu.
5 Specify a location for the copied files on a
valid Performance volume.Manually Find and Relink Opens the Relink win-
dow, where you can search, compare, verify, and
relink missing files.
6 Click OK.

OR

If a session finds files on a volume unsuitable for
playback, a dialog appears prompting you to
copy them to a suitable volume.

To copy Transfer files found when opening a
session, do one of the following:
Click Yes to open the Copy and Relink dialog.
– or –
Click No to open the session with all Transfer
files offline. When opened, the session’s Project
browser indicates Transfer files with a “T” in
their Status column.

Maybe that will help.

Everything you need to know:

http://duc.digidesign.com/showthread.php?t=141658

Should be as simple as going to the Workspace and changing the drive from T or P to R.
