EMERGENCY HELP REQUIRED all privileges denied

Hello,

All my access privileges have been denied and i can't open any of my hard drives and i can't install anything!!

Just get the message "you do not have enough access privileges!

mac osx 10.3.8


everything has been running fine till yesterday when i tried to re-install MDW plugin, i have also recently installed 6.9 cs1 which might have been the start of the problem. when trying to install a plugin it says "error creating file" access denied and then sya "you do not have enough privileges for this installation.

check the priveleges on each drive -- "apple i", which is get info. then adjust your permissions accordingly. this does happen and has happened to me and this is how to fix it.

Thanks, that has helped! i can now open a session etc without all the error messages!! but now as soon as i press play i get spinnig beaachball and have to quit PT, I,ll try repairing permissions and re-boot the entire system. AND PREY.

You may also consider using something like Cocktail or Onyx to delete caches and do general maintenance.

Thanks everyone, things seem to have settled down now!! phew that was a scary few hours!!

What causes this to happen? is it just a random OS thing?

Cocktail @ $15? bargain, i'll have a go with that.

as to what causes this, i dunno, seems like a stupid, crooked OS thing. freaked me out first time too.

This just happened to me, too. At first I thought it had to do with coreaudio, for reasons I don't ned to go into now, but what you describe happened to me almost exactly. My permissions were all a mess. I am a chronic Disk Warrior, Onyx, Disk Utility user, too. Sometimes I use Cocktail. They all have their place. They didn't help me this time. I finally had to go all the way and reinstall everything on a clean hard drive.

The ironic thing about this? It all started after I switched back down to OSX 10.3.8 from OSX 10.3.9. I wasn't having any real problems with 10.3.9, I was just feeling kind of guilty using a version that wasn't on Digi's "Approved" list, kind of like I was living on borrowed time. Fortunately, I have backups of installers and authorizations so I didn't have to reinstall every piece of software from scratch.

Still, what a time-killer.

There is no going backwards with OS X. You either stay where you are, or start over. There is really nothing ironic about why it happened considering what you attempted to do.

I've seen various app installers change the permissions. It can be a random and frustrating event. I try to run fix permissions after every install, it usually sets things straight. I have also become very good friends with the terminal window and chmod -R 777 or chown -R "owner":"group" commands. But use them wisely. Running either of these on your system drive will hurt you badly, very badly. HOwever they can be run on media only drives with impunity. There are a few Unix commands that must be learned to efficiently deal with OS X
