Default What is the beginning and end of a daisy chain...

hey everyone

so i'm getting pretty confused about the whole "daisy-chain" concept.

i understand what is is, but what's the general rule about what's FIRST in the chain?

for example, i have a digi002
i have a pc that has only ONE firewire port

i keep getting mixed messages about where to put my external hard drive

the manual says to connect an external HD into the back of the digi002

is this not the BEST way?

some people say to connect the hard drive to the comp first, then connect the 002 to the back of the hard drive.

what's the right way to do this??

also, what is the beginning/end of this chain?

would the computer be last in the chain?

thanx everyone

hhmmm

ok, so the computer is the first in the chain.

i guess i'm thinking the total opposite.

i mean.... data is going INTO the digi002 and gets stored into external hard drive or hard drive of the computer (seeing that it is possible to record tracks on the comp's hard drive), right?

so wouldn't the computer be the LAST in the chain??

i just want to make sure i'm grasping the whole signal flow concept

lol
of course!
i'm not saying i don't believe him/her,
it's just that i thought i had a good understanding of signal flow...

and since the computer is what's getting input LAST (seeing that audio goes INTO the digi002, then gets saved on the computer's hard drive), one would assume that the last thing in the chain would be the comp, right?

i mean... is there something wrong with the way i'm thinking about this?
if so, i'd like to know so that i won't be wrong

i'm the type of person that wants to understand how things work, u know?

so if someone tells me that the FIRST thing in the chain is the comp, i'd want to understand why that is

hi admin

thanx for the quick reply
it's much appreciated

however, i'm still getting a bit confused

for example, let's just stay that all we got is a computer and digi002...no external hard drive, and we are going to track to the computer

wouldn't the chain be like this: digi002 > computer, rather than computer > digi002?

also,
i just realized that my external hard drive has only one firewire400 port (and 2 firewire800 ports), so i can't hook up my digi002 to the back of the external since it's being taken up by the computer.

in this situation, how should my daisy chanin be then??

thanx so much for ure help
i'm a big stickler for having a optimal setup,
so all ure help is highly appreciated

thanx!

Ok, Admin, I have a question. It seems like I saw a post on here by DigiTechSupt that said the opposite.

If I remember right he said (quoted from my memory),

Quote:
We only recommend the hard disk be between the computer and the interface so there is less risk of files being corrupted on the hard disk. But actually there are better performance results if the interface is between the hard disk and computer.
Is this correct? If we connect the interface between the computer and hard disk, is it better, but the only risk is if the interface gets unplugged, which will corrupt some files?

Try thinking of the firewire cable as a two way street. The information goes in both directions, not from point A to point B.

Cheers,
