Default Pro Tools 2018 installation question

Hello!

I had to recently update my macbook pro, so I have to use 2018 now. My question is, my macbook pro still has 12.5 on it. Do I have to uninstall that before installing 2018, or can I just write over it like with other versions? If uninstall, would a simple uninstall of 12.5, and install 2018 work just fine?

Thanks!

Mike.

Writing over it is fine. You can even install 2018 next to 12.5. Just rename the current Pro Tools (like add "12.5" to the name) and it won't get touched but will move over the settings to the new version installed.

Cool! Thanks! Unfortunately, 12.5 isn’t usuable/compatible with my system anymore (based on threads I’ve read, and on the Avid website), so I’ll have to jump to 2018 only. That’s why I wanted to make sure of the installation process regarding uninstalling 12.5 or simply overwriting, etc. Would there be any reason I would need 12.5 amd 2018 on the same computer?

No. 10 will refuse to install on High Sierra. You could have it on the same system if you had upgraded through versions of macOS with 10 being installed on an earlier compatible version but you can't install 10 as a fresh install on a recent macOS version.

No. I usually keep 2-3 versions back each time a new version comes out (just rename the old version it's full version number like "Pro Tools" becomes "Pro Tools 12.8.3" and then install the new version which becomes "Pro Tools.") That way if there's a critical bug in the latest version, I can just open the older version and keep working. Pretty much for safety.

Eventually I just delete the older "Pro Tools 12.x.x.app" versions so I don't have too many in my Applications folder. That's all it takes to remove older versions.

Cool! Is it as easy as going to my applications folder, clicking the application icon twice, then renaming it like you would a folder or text file?

I tried Pro Tools 12.5.1 today with Sierra and to my surprise is working! Avid said officially that it isn’t supported, then I found some stuff on the Avid site that said it is supported, but only with a certain version of Sierra, so I got frustrated and just decided to boot it up and it works, so I may hold off on 2018, unless there are some really cool features that are worth the $300 reinstatement?
