The download for 7.4.2 clearly states 10.5.3 only! this may not be your problem? but Digi haven't qualified 10.5.4 so i would stay within their recommendation and re-install "fresh Leopard install" and only go to 10.5.3.

After a fresh install of Leopard 10.5.3, download the installer again for 7.4.2 to make sure it was not corrupted and start again.

You could stay on 10.5.4 and spend time troubleshooting a non qualified system if you want! but my route is to keep things 100% and i haven't had a single day of down time since jaguar.
