Wow this really seems opinionated on which setup is best.

Usb would be quick an get the job done.
Internal may have some more performance advantages.

If anyone wants to recommend one i would appreciate the advise.

Knowing how to install a hard drive in a PC tower is the technical equivalent to knowing how to put on a spare tire on a car... Except that it's easier...but everyone should know how to do it.

It's lego inside a computer, homie.

If all you have is internal hdd slots and USB ports then go internal, which has been stated. The only reason to even consider an external drive for audio, on a desktop, is if you work often in other studios. In that case eSata is faster than USB 2.0 and works with both PT 8 and 9. However, these days dragging the session files to a USB 2 or 3 flash drive, or uploading to FTP server is more convenient for getting files to the engineer at another studio.

I *just* moved away from using a USB 2.0 7200rpm drive w/ Pro Tools LE 8.0.5 towards eSATA. The former gave me the Buffer Underflow errors. The latter did not (after increasing buffer size). I would keep the receipt for the USB drive if you're heading out to buy it.

Thx man. I did decide to go internal SATA. Only ran into one snag. I have a HP slimline and there is no extra bay for another hdd. So I'm gonna mod the case. I'm removing the HP pocket drive from the case and installing a 3.5" wd black 7200 1tb. There's just enough room between the power supply and fan for one. I did look into 2.5" and sdd but they climb outa my price range. Also had to buy a power spliter and another SATA cable. The mother board supports it the computer just wasnt designed to hold that much stuff. While im in there I have one port left for memory and I'm adding 2 more GB. That'll bring me up to 8 total. It's gona be great when im done. :)
