Default Re: AAE-9173 - Ran Out Of CPU Power

Did you ever solve this? I'm currently having the same issue. Yesterday was running PT12 fine.... Today I keep getting the "Pro tools ran out of CPU power" error message (AAe -9173) everytime I press play. Even in a blank session with no plug ins. When I switch to the computers audiodriver it doesnt happen which makes me think its a problem with my interface? Scarlett 18i20

The root cause of 9173 errors has been illusive. There are a ton of clues, and anecdotal input from many users, but to date, it's just not really nailed down.

The best advice I can offer is to experiment with each system individually, and look for workflow, hardware, and software choices that will minimize the issue for you.

Default Random CPU Spikes (-9173 errors)

I'm POSITIVE this has been asked, but since Avid has theoretically resolved this and now two versions later it's still happening... asking again.

My CPU will fluctuate between 25 and 40% and then for no particular reason just spike to over 100% and stop playback. Is there something I missed? Freezing tracks doesn't even really cut it, and I only have 2 plugins on my mix bus (MJUC and Waves EQP-1A). Any non-"well use fewer plugins or buy a new computer" solutions? Never been a problem until 12.7 (I'm now on 12.8).

Have you done all the optimizations Avid suggests? I do get these on occasion, but 12.8 seems much better then 12.6 and earlier versions for me. If you've gone through those, you could start removing any 3rd part plugins to see if that is a cause.

In my experience 12.8 is better but I still have this problem of random 9XXX errors. Despite the improvement it's still very frustrating, especially when multitracking a band with zero plugins and a generous buffer of 128. I got better performance years ago with a Digi 002 at a 64 buffer on a much less robust computer.

Regardless, I've had a number of interactions with support over this and about 3 months ago was told that there was a special team on it and that they were hoping for a resolution within 6 months. So, to my knowledge, this is still being addressed by Avid.

Man, I'm using a 2GB disk cache and a 1024 buffer, and I still get this ****. Trying updating all my 3rd party plugs since the MJUC has always been a weirdo with CPU usage, so we'll see what happens soonish.

Here's a weird thing – particularly this seems to spike an happen with FabFilter plugs open. They've ALWAYS been low-CPU usage regardless of their realtime displays. Anyone else notice this?

I've been getting these all year but with PT 12.8 suddenly there's a new wrinkle. Usually when getting the error I hit return and continue working. No matter how many times in a session the error occurred I once again just hit return. Now though around the third time the error pops up, when I hit return and play all the audio plays back completely distorted. The only remedy is to restart PT. At least I don't have to restart the computer!

Anyone else have this situation?

My H/W Buffer size is set to 2048 samples
Disk Playback Cache Size set to 3gb

OSX Sierra
PT 12.8

12.8 has improved things but I still get a consistent -9173 when I press and hold any key while the session is playing. Every time, without fail.

I've started turning off wifi and quitting all other applications. I think maybe it's helping a little. Also consolidating all tracks whose editing is done. Whatever you can do to lighten the load for PT!
