Video File Server with Pro Tools
I was Just wondering with my big head, can I run my video drives from a file server to Pro Tools (not my PT Files, just Video from projects)? EX. I would Run my session with my audio files on my Workstation PC, and add video that would access video through a 1000Gb switch (with no internet connection on that channel).

Re: Video File Server with Pro Tools
Yea I was wondering. It would be nice to have PT Satellite on the LE Systems as well.

Re: Video File Server with Pro Tools
Yes it can be done. I got a SAN from a supplier http://www.2degreesfrost.com/ This uses SATA over ethernet and you need a copy of Fibrejet for each Pro Tols system that you connect to the SAN. We are running 3 systems, 2 edit and a Mix system, from the system with no problems at all. We can run complete Pro Tools sessions from the SAN over ethernet. You can use the spare ethernet port on the new 8 Cores so there is no need for a separate card. Setup is simple and the unit is relatively inexpensive compared to other Video SAN's.
Robin, who is the main person at 2 Degrees is very helpful, we took a punt on this and got it shipped to Australia and we have a spares kit. hope this helps Simon L. |

Re: Video File Server with Pro Tools
Yes you can play video from a video server. We have a large Xsan based video server and are able to play the videos in PT without a problem (you get a message that the video is on a non play back drive when you load a session or import a clip but if you click cancel it works anyway). You can do this via gigabit ethernet too. But I would recommend testing before making any purchase :)

Re: Video File Server with Pro Tools
OK. My thing is that I am starting to get into video, and I use Sony Vegas. I am planning to have a render machine that will double as a video server. Now that I know people is using it, what is your setup like? do you have any photos or links?

Re: Video File Server with Pro Tools
Hi sleadley,
I'm interested in knowing what kind of protools performance you are experiencing? Have you tried any beat detected drums with tons of crossfades and high track counts on multiple machines? I was seriously considering that solution but couldn't afford it not to work and no local dealers. So I passed. I don't do video much myself, mostly mixing and the sessions are very often very large. Would love to know more about it's performance abilities. Thanks! Mike |
