Default Eleven rack and Mac mini

Hey Guys,
First time poster. I'm inches away from buying the eleven rack with the pt11 and a Mac mini. I built a small studio setup 10 years ago with a digitech gnx4 as my interface/modeler and a xp laptop. In those days it was killer! Lots of I/o, on board drum machine, sweet reverb plug too. I used the included daw at the time, guitar pro or guitar tracks...stripped down sonar. Added a midi keyboard and a few pre amps and wham! It was a sweet setup back then, and it served its purpose for a very long time. It's so antiquated now, that it just frustrates the hell outta me, the tones just don't do it like they once did, it is time for it all to go to gear heaven...anyways, I digress.

So I'm excited and ready to buy all new hardware, but I have some questions about the Mac mini. It will be my first mac outside of iPads and iPhones. I'm looking at the newest i7 quad core. I was going to upgrade the ram to 16g myself, and I will need a second hard drive for sure. The main three questions I have are ;

1) is the 1tb, 5400 internal hd ok to use for the os, or should I be upgrading to an ssd? I see that apple charges stupid expensive prices for ram and hd upgrades, which makes me want to not upgrade the internal unless it's really necessary. I see you tube vids that it looks fairly easy to DIY, but of course voids the warranty. Any suggestions for a decent Second hd for my music and sounds?

2) what should I be using for my second drive? USB, FireWire, or thunderbolt (if they make a drive w/thunderbolt)?

3) Does the eleven rack stand up as a sole interface? I will be running a mic or two, and my Roland drums into the line inputs at times, but other than that I may consider a second interface with more mic pre's if I need 'em.

Also, how can I integrate my ipad4, can I somehow use it as a control surface?

Anyways, I appreciate any and all advice. If I am posting in the wrong place forgive me, and point me the right way. I am of the generation that grew up without computers so forgive me if I'm asking questions that seem simple. The new setup will be for home/personal use only. I'm only a rock star in my mind

Peace,

Dobb.

Almost 200 views and nothing? Surely there must be someone using pt11 and 11r with a mini mac?

It's only been a few hours. This isn't the busiest of forums to begin with....lots of lurkers but not a lot of active contributors always on. You'll find they're here within a day though.

For most audio applications, 7200 is always recommended and not the 5400 rpm drives. With SSD now, most 90% would tell you it's worth the upgrade. There are always thunderbolt to USB or FW adaptors so it really wouldn't matter on either.

The RAM issue / warranty issue is tricky. Maybe try getting by on 8 GBs for now and add it at an Apple Store if you're near one later on. ??? They kind of hoop you that way. That's Apple's MO unfortunately and people still love Apple.

Good luck. You'll do fine. You already seem well prepared for what you're getting into.

I think you should be able to do alot of tracks without external hard drive. When it's starting to choke, add one. As a reference, I was able to do 20 tracks with eq, external reverb out of Digi001 and Mac G4 400mhz!!! So a Mac Mini has alot more horsepower!!!

Regarding interface it depends on the number of I/O you need. 11R is good but remember since PT10 you can connect any interface.

Thanks for your replies. I didn't mean to come off testy, just looking for reassurance that I'm picking the right hardware. It may be small potatoes in studio dollars, but $2k is $2k. My wife has been laughing at me all week. I can walk in to a dealership and buy a vehicle in a few hours...but I've been researching and mulling over my studio upgrades for over a week lol. She asks me every day "did you buy it yet"?

I have to learn pro tools and the eleven rack, so I am prepared for a learning curve that may be a little steep. I think during that time I will be able to better evaluate what upgrades will be needed for my situation. From what I've gathered, the mini should run pt11 stock to begin with, as long as I'm light on track counts and plug ins.

Since I last posted, I have been doing more research. In doing so I found that the quad core mini is on the avid approved list, which makes me feel a whole lot better about my decision to take the plunge.

As far as warranty goes, I was aware that if I did the hd swap that the warranty would void, but I'm not so sure a ram upgrade would void the warranty, if it does...well yeah you're right about the way apple does things.

As a side note, while searching the webs I found what looks to be a fantastic app that enables one to use an iPad as a serious control surface in pt. I'm a newb so I can't post links, but it's called the neyrinck v-control pro. At $50 it's gotta be THE cheapest way to obtain a good control surface if you have an iPad.

Peace,

Dobb.

Not to confuse you any more, but have you looked at Logic? I switched over from PT a few years ago and it was the best move I ever made. Now with the new Logic ProX it's really amazing, especially if you do a lot of writing. They also have a remote app for the iPad that's free. It was the best $200 I ever spent! Not to bash PT because it's a great program, but I was tired of paying the money they wanted for their upgrades.

First off adding/changing ram on your own does NOT void AppleCare. Never has. As far as upgrading the system drive - that I don't know. But as to the 5400 rpm system drive I'd upgrade to either a 7200 drive or an ssd. External drives on either Thunderbolt or USB3 will work just fine.

The 11R will work just fine as a sole interface - that's what I use on the system in my sig file. Been working no problem for 2 1/2 years.

Thank you for your reply.

I'm just put my order in for no ram upgrade (I can do it for significantly less) and an ssd. It's worth the extra $40 (since the ssd's i found run $150-160 and apple wants $200)to not void the warranty, and I'll upgrade the ram myself.

I'm really grateful for responses to my thread, and I'm looking forward to hanging around here in the future.

Rock on my friends,

Dobb

I see no need for you to upgrade internal hdd, anyway PT approved config is always with external hdd. 5400rpm vs 7200rpm is a legacy debate (used to be 10000rpm vs 7200rpm few years ago). RPM is just part of the equation...

As I said, start recording and see where your system starts to choke and upgrade accordingly. Don't spend money on system upgrade for nothing, spend it on better mic, preamp, cables, converters etc.
