a) it's just the software that requires the HD cards and HD interfaces to work
b) looks fishy to me

if you have the cards get the 10/11 combo upgrade, if your computer can handle it
8 was not a good version, stay at 7.4 or go to 9+

FWIW, I have bought from AltoMusic several times and find them to be a solid and honest dealer(and they ARE an Avid dealer). I don't think there is any risk here, other than you(the buyer) need to KNOW what you need, and what you are purchasing

They likely have lots of used TDM software as they have taken in plenty of used TDM systems, cards and such.

Their ad says call them if you have questions... so call them.

I bought my 16X16 from Alto - no issues

I got my native card and 192 from there. Can't say enough about Anthony! Call them up, they are great to deal with!

If it were my system, I would probably update the OS to v10.6.8, and Pro Tools to v8.1.1.

Lots of info here:
Pro Tools HD for Mac OS X Compatibility & Upgrade Information

Pro Tools Update & Upgrade Information
Updates

Quote:
Pro Tools HD 8.0 is a paid upgrade from Pro Tools HD 7.4.x and earlier
  • Pro Tools HD 8.0.1 for Mac OS X 10.5 is a free download for v8.0 owners
  • Pro Tools HD 8.0.3 for Mac OS X 10.6 & 10.5 is a free download for v8.0 owners
  • Pro Tools HD 8.0.5 for Mac OS X 10.6 & 10.5 is a free download for v8.0 owners
  • Pro Tools HD 8.1.1 for Mac OS X 10.6 is a free download for v8.0-8.1 owners
A couple of other things that might be useful information for you now or in the future...

1 - Unless the Pro Tools HD 8 license is an NFR (not for resale version, often given to dealers), then there is an upgrade path from PTHD 8 to PTHD 10. See the Avid store Pro Tools software section:
Home > Audio & Music Creation > Pro Tools > Software
(scroll down to "Pro Tools 10 HD Upgrade From 7/8")

2 - Pro Tools HD 9 and higher iLok licenses are not transferable.
