Default Can't record to external HD

Asking for a friend whom I am trying to help upgrade to PT 12.x, but before that, I need to convince him that PT works at all.

He has Pro Tools 8.x MBox version and has been recording to his main C drive HD, always very light sessions with a couple of tracks. Windows 10 Home on an old i3 PC.

His system is painfully slow, and we are working on that, but when I advised him to record to his external HD which is permanently attached and dedicated to Acronis (who knows what is going on there), we get some sort of "do not have permission" warning.

Any ideas? When I look at the properties of the external drive, it appears he has "full control". Am I missing something?

Look in the Pro Tools workspace and make sure the drive is marked for record (R). If it’s only marked for transfer (T) or playback (P), Pro Tools won’t record to it.

In addition to above, the formatting can make or break recording. Exactly how is the external drive formatted(example, PT cannot record to a DYNAMIC drive). Beyond that, back in the days when LE8 and Mbox were "current", i3 was not recommended and USB drives were also not recommended. Pretty much everything about the setup is obsolete
