Default When to leave Elastic Audio Track as Sample-Based?

What would be an example of when I would want to leave an Elastic Audio track as sample-based, rather than tick-based?

Say you're editing sound for a film. The nice and beautiful swoosh you built last week doesn't fit anymore in the film's latest cut. It has to start at exactly the same time though, but the sequence is now a few frames shorter... That's one example.

Anytime you want to change your tempo/tempo map but don't want EA edits to follow it.

Thanks to both...

The thing I have the hardest time wrapping my head around and keeping straight, is that elastic audio, on a sample-based track, will not automatically telescope in and out as you change the tempo setting; but WILL respond to the Conform To Tempo command...

Following on that, if what I want to do is Conform To Tempo an audio clip (after putting it in Elastic Audio), will it be higher resolution/quality, therefore better, to leave the track set to sample-based?

If I understand your question correctly, no - it will be whatever EA algorithm you've set. For the highest quality you should use Xform rendered - this of course is very slow, so generally I wait until I'm totally done with edits and then change it to xform and let it render.

one thing i have never been able to work out is the global setting in the tracks view.. linear sample display or linear tick display..

Manual info on it is poor also.

can't see to ascertain any difference with it when EA is on, or whatever ruler I am using.

Anyone know?

That is helpful, thanks; I'm going to try to remember as, the track setting sample-based vs. tick-based has only to do with which ruler clips are tied to, and nothing to do with quality of any audio...

It's not going to affect EA or the location of events - just how they are displayed.
