Which PT version for my system?
Hi,
I am currently on PT11, and want to upgrade on the most solid and stable native PT version to this day. I am looking for input from actual users who run PT systems and can confirm its rock solid and as much CPU friendly as possible, at least for the time being. My current system is an iMac mid 2011 Intel Core i5, 12GB ram, SSD drive, running OSX 10.3.6. Should I stay at this OS and get PT 2018? Or upgrade to latest Mojave and get PT 2019? Thanks |

Re: Which PT version for my system?
Latest macOS&PT indeed is very smooth and solid release, but before that you at least need to upgrade your memory.. 12GB ram isn't going to be enough for a good experience

Re: Which PT version for my system?
Generally 2019.5, might as well go to the latest Mojave. So far it seems a spectacular release, with major improvements in plugin processing.
But you need more memory, should have 16GB or more. What is more your iMac is an oddball I even memory config that it would be better not to run at. So look at your memory upgrade options first. This applies to 2018/2019 so just get it done. But instead of doing an in-situ upgrade to Mojave, take the opportunity to do a full clean install. Partition your drive or add a new external SSD and do a full clean install of Mojave on that new drive/partition.. then Pro Tools and ILM and test, then other stuff... I have described doing that in more detail on several other posts on DUC recently. |

Re: Which PT version for my system?
I would stay at 10.13 where you are (right? 10.3 did not run on i5)
and try 2019.5 first. Should work fine. I'm in the 'do not upgrade as long as possible' camp. I run 2019.5 on Sierra, the lowest os supported by that version, and so far, everything seems good. Tried Mojave but noticed the loss of cpu power, the same session is more cpu hungry under Mojave. It is still a undeveloped system by OLD Apple standards... Yeah, dating myself here ;-) |

Re: Which PT version for my system?
I can only go 16GB RAM max on my iMac.
Currently have 4+4+2+2 modules, so I will have to buy two 4GB modules to replace the 2 2GB ones. Is Mojave really less CPU friendly with 2019.5, than the same PT version on 10.13.6? |

Re: Which PT version for my system?
Well, if you only have 16GB of RAM, i would find the oldest OS that runs 2019.5 and stick with that. That is Mac OS 10.12 Sierra. If 10.13 works for you why not try to stay there first? Mojave does not bring anything to the table audio-wise, imho. And every new feature of the OS costs RAM and CPU, usually. That's how it always have been.
Now go, try, and let us know what works for _you_ so others can benefit. |

If you are going to mess around upgrading stuff and your Mac supports Mojave just get on the latest. 2019.5 runs beautifully well on Mojave. Relatively early days but it is a very impressive release. ---- And yes exact Model number and EMC number as well... printed on the back of the Mac. Right now we can't tell it this is a 21.5" or 27" iMac or what. Don't tell us... give us the actual model and EMC numbers. |
