Default Automation acting weird...

Why is it that when I select a portion of a clip (in volume track view) sometimes only one side changes. IOW, I want to raise or lower the level of a portion of a clip. It ends up creating a fade since it only hanged one side and not both sides.

This trouble is intermittent.

Default

I think I may have figured it out. Instead of highlighting a portion of a clip and adjusting the automation I split the clip into another clip where the automation change was needed. Sometimes I don't have to do this step. Why is that?
