Default Surround I/O setup

Can someone talk me through how to setup the I/O so that I can bounce a session for surround and end up with files that I can import into DVD Studio pro. I am trying to have 5 descret channels when I am done. thanks for any help.

if you've set up your session with 5.1 outputs on all the tracks..

In the box:

create a 5.1 buss in the IO setup.
buss all the outputs of your mix to the 5.1 buss
create a 5.1 audio track with the input being the 5.1 buss
re-record the session to the 5.1 audio track.
Hilight from the start to the end time of the recording with the EXACT lenght of time you need for the DVD AC3 file
Record to the 5.1 audio track
the files in this track can be used in Dolby A-pack for an AC3 file. ( assuming the session is already 48Khz 16 bit aiff or Wav ) if it is anything different you'll then have to export the 6 files from the session with the right settings before creating the AC3 file.

Outside the box.
If you are using an external console... just rebuss the 5.1 stem back to protools as show above.

cheers
georgia

Hello Georgia,

I'm just curious as to why you suggest using a 5.1 buss and recording the session back in via a 5.1 audio track etc!!

Why not just have all the channels use a 5.1 output and panner and then have a 5.1 master fader and bounce down to HD via the 5.1 master fader!!

Regards

Chris

Chris,

because an audio track cannot have an output device as an input.
Georgia is perfectly right.

I think he is talking about the "bounce to disk" function, which I have done, and it works well. As long as you have everything on 5.1 panners, when you select bounce to disk, you can select 5.1 to bounce. Just make you have enough room, it won't tell you until after the bounce is done, and you have wasted your time.

There is actually an advantage when re-recording your files back to ProTools, as you can always punch-in for any correction you might need. I usually do it using the "Destructive Record" function, so the result is always one file per track.

Well, I'm aware of three ways to Mix-in-the-Box, regardless of format:

1 - Bounce to disk

Pros:
drinks for all during bounce (== length of program)
Cons:
No control whatsoever; also no picture, if you're in post.
After bouncing, you'll have to meticulously check the bounce for small mistakes like pops or glitches caused by automation switching. And if you do find faults: how do you propose to correct them? Bounce again??

2 - Patch physical output to physical input

most likely using AES out to AES in.
OK, but not very elegant; useful if your session is so fat that you don't have any busses left.
At 5.1, needs more than one basic interface.

3 - Make a parallel output of your mix to a new bus, and use this new bus as input to the audio track recording the mix. And route output of this track to a different physical output than the mix-out ( To get PEC-direct, or AB, monitoring).
Only this is really in-the-box mixing.

If on top you use destructive record, you'll be able to start, stop, correct, punch, insert as many times as you like, and still end up with one continuous mixed file ready for delivery.

Cheers
Florian

Florian and others are correct here. Hands down the best way to get things done.
