Default MIDI Instruments Won't Stop!

Hi, Pro Tools Community!

This is my first post, and I have never been more frustrated with trying to figure something out.

I'm running a large orchestral template that's based mainly on MIDI, one of the instruments, EastWest Hollywood Choirs Gold is being used, and it will not stop playing certain notes. The patch I'm using is a multi, and not just a normal patch. I noticed that the problem persists with other sound libraries running through Kontact at times.

Problem is, I can't see any rhyme or reason to the issue. Some of the notes just aren't sending midi-off data, I'm guessing. I've pretty much confirmed that the problem lies with Pro Tools, since I CAN get them to stop while using other DAWs.

It's not a RAM or processing issue, since I deleted all but the problem MIDI/Instrument tracks (in a copy of the session), and when I try to play it back, the issue is still there. It works when I import the session data into a fresh session, but the rest of the piece is in the original session.

PLEASE Help! I'm at my wit's end.

Unfortunately welcome to the 'stuck notes' club

As evidenced in other threads here this is nothing new and what makes it a problem to diagnose is it doesn't happen all the time and it's system independent as well. You could have a fire-breather system and still get stuck notes.

Something that triggers them for me is use of the sustain pedal; not all the time but in passages with a lot of notes in say a piano playing through Kontakt and liberal use of the sustain pedal will make them happen. Check the MIDI event list for unwanted sustain (cc64) messages. Also you'll not see note off messages in that list or anywheres in any PT screen/windowlets.

Just double checked the sustain events...there’s nothing there. I’m fact the passage is pretty exposed, it’s JUST the choir in that section. I was looking for MIDI-Off data, but couldn’t find it. Where is it listed/editable?

As I mentioned there isn't anything that you can find in any PT display that shows MIDI note off messages.

I finally found a pattern. It is correlated with tempo changes! The notes only stick during linear or parabolic tempo changes. I'm thinking there may not be a solution. 😔 Do you have any other ideas now that you have that information?

Wish I did. I only use specific tempo changes; nothing on a continuous change say from 120 through 160. My way is 120 and then a discrete change to 160 for example.

I just got confirmation from EastWest that it is in fact a problem on THEIR end. Thanks for your help anyway!

And a big thank you for this post - EW products are one of my mainstays along with Kontakt libraries.
