Default New build i9 7900x - .ptx query

Hey everyone - I am a long time iMac user and was looking forward to the new iMac pro coming along later this year - until I found out how much it would cost...

So I have decided to spend less money and have an i9 DAW pc built that far outspecs the new iMac - more DDR4 RAM, three Evo SSD's, better graphics card etc..etc..

So my question is really a basic one (apologies) - only just thought about it.

My external audio drive contains all my .ptx sessions - created on my iMac - when I plug it in will they still open on Windows?

Thanks in advance,

Tony

You will need something like Paragons HFS+ for Windows. I would only use this as a temporary relief. Reformat your drive(s) for NTFS as quickly as possible.

Yep get Paragon HFS+. Mac Drive is the other driver for HFS hard drives. It's much slower and worse.

I would just migrate to NTFS if you are giving up on Mac. Easiest way is to move the files between Mac and PC systems on a network.

Folks who live in a mixed world are likely to be need to be careful about APFS. Paragon is saying they have no plans to support APFS.

Thanks guys - appreciate it. One more thing - have you any experience with the AMD chips? The AMD Ryzen Threadripper 1950X with 16 cores and 32 threads looks like a possible substitute for the Intel chip - any views on it?

Thx Tony, Please keep the thread posted on the build and any issues / successes. I am thinking of doing the same thing. Wouldn't mind communicating either - you can PM me if you wish. Thx

It’s not a substitute for Intel processors in the sense the motherboards and support chipsets are all different. And that is where the rubber meets the road. What we need are volunteers to build systems using ThreadRipper and let us know how well or not they work... I'm also curious to hear of builds.

One limitation is no Thunderbolt on ThreadRipper, which may or may not be an issue for users.
