Default Your go to vocal compressor?

Hi All -

I finally caved and bought the Wave's SSL bundle. This is rocking hard for my drums and guitars. However, even when I'm mixing on a real 4000 in the non-virtual world, I don't use the SSL channel compressor on vocals. I typically go for an LA-2A.

Can anyone share what their "go to" vocal compressor plugin is. I've been engineering for a long time and already know that it "depends on the song, vocalist, etc". But, I also know I have a goto mic, compressor, eq, etc... that I try first and usually keep. So, share with us what your go to is.

I don't have an LA-2A type plug, so right now.... I'm without a "go to" compressor in the virtual world.

Curious,
-Tom

The URS 1970 is very nice. McDSP CompressorBank, Waves Renn Compressor, Sony Dynamics are also good choices.

Hi,

I'll second the URS 1970! its the closest plugin to my Tube-tech CLIB and its my favourite on vocals and guitar.

Well, if you love the LA2A, I hate to say this, but you should check out UA plugs (1176 and LA2A), but only if you have a free PCI slot and are willing to get the UAD card and use a VST wrapper. The 1176 and LA2A are my favorite vocal plug ins, and very close to the hardware, but they are discontinuing support of their TDM plugs.

Yeah, I've used the UAD-1 on another project where the studio had one. I, unfortunately, don't have a free slot. I've got an HD3 Accel and no expansion chassie.

How's the Bomb Factory LA-2A?

I didn't bother mentioning the UAD La2a & 1176 TDM (which I love) because they have been discontinued. Still the URS 1970 is just as good.

If you scroll upward a bit, you'll see that Francois says they work in 7.2.

As amazing as it is, the Waves Renaissance Vox is actually really good at compressing vocals. It's not perfect and definetely not a tweak-all-you-want-as-long-as-you-wish type plugin, but it works very nicely.

Other than that, I've liked Sony Oxford Dynamics and BombFactory LA-2
