geforce gt 120 seems to be the slowdown for others. There are several other posts on this.

Now I have twin GT 120's and 3- 24" displays, HDX HD 11.3.1 2009 Mac OS 10.9.5 with added Nvidia drivers and it all runs great.
24Gb memory, Dual quad (8core) 4,1 Mac Pro

Hi Guys - I have an early 2009 Mac Pro 4.1 2.26. 20GB NVidia GT 120 running PT 11.3.1 on Yosemite 10.10.1.

I was suffering from lag, especially in the video responsiveness, but also just in general from not just PT but other applications as well.

Anyway, long story short, on a hunch, I went out and found the specific NVidia driver for 10.10.1 and now it is running like somebody oiled all the moving parts of PT11. Running like a dream. Its only been a day, but none of the stops or weird lagginess anymore. I'll update if anything changes.

Just wanted to share.

I have nearly the exact same setup as you, OP. PT was laggy with both my GT120 and HD5770. I recently got an off the shelf ASUS GTX750 ti and the GUI lag improved greatly. Of course a non Apple video card comes with it's own small problems like no boot screen and having to use the nVidia web driver which are no big deal to me.

Heres the one I got...

I don't know one way or the other with the 460gtx, but hopefully the 5770 fixes your lag. Im not sure why I still got some lag with my 5770 as I would think its a plenty power video card for 2D applications. FWIW, I was getting lag in Yosemeite in general, not just PT.
