Default MIDI, sample cycle triggering with the same note?

Hi. a question for any programmer gurus out there,
Im not sure really what to ask... i used a v-drum kit the other day and there was one preset where every time I hit the kick drum it would cycle through a certain number of different samples on each hit.
how is this done ?
I have reason and pt, and i want to be able to replicate this process with these if possible.

any advice ??
