External SSD
I have the new 64 core 3990x. Its ridiculous. I have OS and PT installed on an Samsung NVME 970 Pro. I have a blank external SATA3 Samsung Evo 860. Any thoughts on recording sessions to the internal NVME versus the external SATA3? My issue is HW Buffer Size error when tracking to an HDD. The CPU is barely working at 1-4% per core, the RAM is barely working with 256GB and 32GB disk cache, and still hw buffer size when recording to my 7200rpm HDD. So where should I move sessions? In either case this should help lower buffer size right?

Re: External SSD
Hmmm, does the external SSD also have a USB connection? If so, could that be limiting speed? The NVME is likely to outperform any other connection, and recording to a second internal SSD would be my preferred setup. I have several external drives and have not had any issues(and don't know why you do), but I prefer to leave externals for backups and transfers only(under normal circumstances). Maybe more details would reveal other possible causes(posting a Sandra report is a great idea when posting about problems on a Windows machine)

Re: External SSD
Hard to beat NVMe speeds currently

Re: External SSD
Intrigued to know if you got this resolved ?
As far as I can see as at time of posting you have the only Threadripper 3990X on the DUC |

Re: External SSD
Jfreak, you recommend a decent NVMe for my 5,1 ?.

Re: External SSD
Any NVMe is fast enough. Because 5,1 only has PCIe 2.0 and the sticks are 3.0 you need a special switching card that combines multiple 2.0 lanes together, otherwise you are effectively running the storage on half speed.
So choosing a good card to host your NVMe has bigger impact for performance than choosing the actual storage. But with that said, even PCIe 2.0 speeds are so much better than SATA bays built in, you would be satisfied with the cheapest SSD card and "any brand" SSD storage.

Re: External SSD
No problem.
But as you asked for which SSD might just as well share that I got Intel p660 2TB M.2 stick (with sintech adapter) for a great price. That is just as good as it gets with my Trashcan. Samsungs are more popular but also more expensive. Real-world performance is not so different, because of the PCIe 2.0 speed bottleneck. I could only get faster storage on external ThunderBolt PCIe chassis but don't want to go there just yet.

Need your advice. I just purchased an EVO 970, and looking fo a decent adaptor. The sintech you have is not made for a 2010 Mac pro ?, says 2013/2015. ?

Re: External SSD
Yes you are right, the Sintech adapter is meant for 2013 "trashcan" models. For the older "cheesegrater" models you need a PCI-express card that can host one or more M.2 sticks.
