Default A MIXING QUESTION

If I wanted to record a session using protools and have someone else mix it for me later on what is the best way to record the session so that it could be easily mixed down by an engineer. I was wondering about things such as using compression in, how much input gain to use,and other things of this nature. Also I have the Waves Ren Complete bundle but I am not experienced enough to properly mix a session using it. I was wondering would there be a problem for the engineer mixing the sesion if I used some of the plugins on a couple of the tracks?

Track w/o eq and minimal compression, keeping nominal levels at -18dbfs.

Leave the dynamics, eq and efx for the mix stage.

concentrate on capturing the best possible sound, varying mics, preamps, micing techniques, tunings, instruments....to achieve this.

Hope this is helpful.

It can help to make a very very rough mix, to give the engineer an idea of what you are looking for. Just dont use audiosuite plugins, only RTAS.

You could also edit out the stuff you dont want in the mix. But be sure to leave it in the regions-listing. You maybe change your mind...

There was an article in Digizine last year that talked about session interchange guidelines. It might be helpful.

Suggested Session Interchange Guidelines - Digizine June 2002
