Tape had its day but it is dead. And more IT departments might be in for a surprise if they actually went and tried to read lots of old archive tapes.

It all depends on what timeframe of archiving you look at, but more and more modern large scale enterprise IT and web scale archives are magnetic disk based. With disks spun down or even powered down to save power.

At all cost avoid proprietary formats, they can be harder to fix if the media/system has problems and the company goes out of business. Do not rely on a single archive. Spread the risk around with a combination of backup/archiving to magnetic disk, optical disk (e.g. DVD-ROM) and cloud based backup. Have an indexing/labeling system where you have a hope of finding something. Whoever develops that needs to document it for others. Written down rules for staff to follow. And get some of those optical or external disk archives off-site in a media storage facility or safety deposit box (use several different sites). Be sure to keep a system around that can read your archives, it may need to be a system with say SATA III drives, and a DVD-ROM drive well past both those technologies being popular. And if this stuff has any significant value you need to try reading it every so often. If archives are failing, duplicate those from other media.

I use an external drive, but also use Dropbox and Copy.com for online backups.

Both of those services have the advantage of just dragging or saving content in a folder, and syncing in the Cloud.

Definitely makes sense to get RAID/network storage for professional use.

Did you ever get a chance to give Gobbler a try? There are a lot of neat technologies we use to minimize the amount of data transferred while not effecting audio quality.

Lightbulb Re: Have a Backup Plan. Regardless of platform

Just to add to this discussion, it's also a good idea to have a backup plan for your DAW, and plugin installers. How many times have we seen people install a new version of Pro Tools, something is incompatible, and the previous version is no longer available for download.

The same thing can happen to plugins where a new version may break something and the previous version is no longer able to be downloaded from your account.

Having a backup of all installers, and sound libraries also makes it so much easier to install everything when you reinstall your OS, move to a new computer, ect...

It's also a good idea to backup all Serial Numbers and have a copy stored locally and in the cloud.

Here is a video that goes through some backup strategy ideas that you should consider implementing for your studio. The best way to avoid down time is to think defensively and be responsible for your own needs at all times. The cloud is a great thing. Being able to log in to an account and download what you need when you need it is an awesome advance in how software is delivered. But, don't depend on it always being there. A dedicated backup drive that costs $50-$100 will save you so much time in the long run. Remember the old saying, "It's better to have it and not need it, than to need it and not have it". Backup everything that is critical to your studio!

Yes, but in my case I store "all" plugins and installers this way:

- PT8 (and plugins current at that time and deleting old ones, deleting old ones)
- PT10 (and plugins current at that time and up until PT12)
- PT12 (and current plugins now)

There are times when platform is evolving but plugins basically stay the same. Therefore there is no reason to store "everything", but the point is be sure you have the old installers because it might be so that you can only download the current ones.
