Someone Rolfe me it goes down to 44.1 in the end but that's over my head. If my Digi 003 won't let me mix at 96 then I will probably go the ADA 8200. A new octo pre is almost 900 Aussie dollars which is about 600 more than the 8200. Are the pre's that much better. Finally, I think I'd prefer the mixer out signals to be eqd even if just a little or should I be leaving my signal clean.
Thanks again it's a massive help
You could get a LS 56 (has 2 light pipe in and out) + 2 octo pre and you would get a total of 16 channels at 96k. That would cost you roughly 1649$ but then you'll have plenty of inputs and outputs possibilities to add analogue hardware if you wanted to for the mixing stage.

Why wouldn't it?

In fact, back in the day I actually did a comparison between 002R@96k and Digi96@48k and found that there is very little difference, if any.

And the 003 is a direct successor to the 002, most improvements not affecting the sound.

LOL, that would be too easy. Although, it would make it harder to 1/2 jack the sleeve to get around a mixer with no direct outs.

Thanks all. I've decided on recording at 48 kHz and will pickup an ADA 8200. I'll have 12 pres and 4 lines and I'll use the Mackies 1604 mixer which has 8 line outs post eq. I'll take another 4 signals from half jacking insert line outs. I'll probably use the remaining 4 line inputs for taking an RCA left and right tape out run through a Di to balance the signal.

You might want to actually go for something else if you're going to limit yourself to the price tag, the ADA 8200 is less than stellar in sound quality. Even the focusrite octopre MK2 (373$ on ebay) are leagues ahead for their price and they should, they share the same preamp as all the saffire line even the saffire pro 40 and the liquid saffire 56.

Or if you want something a bit more clean looking, that you can keep in your rack and not have any cables in the front fighting with any of the knobs (a la ada 8200) if you have big fingers like me, you can go with the octopre mk2 dynamics, it's about 100$ more than the mk2 but all the inputs are on the back side, which I find is a lot more visually appealing and helps to keep things clean in the studio or on a live rig.

+1 for octopre. the old ones sound even better, if you can find one cheap with AD card. the mk2 versions though have the digital option built-in so it's safe choice if you need that digital.

I'll keep an eye out for an octo pre but new there 900 bucks here so it's a rort. I can't buy from the US as I need 240 volt and a converter is just too much gear.

How about www.ebay.co.uk then? That's 240V gear like everywhere else in EU.

I found this one in a minute. Though the user has not specified anything other than shipping to UK in my experience (generally speaking) EU sellers usually don't have a problem shipping internationally.
