Oh it's coming. You are cookied and the timer/visit counter is running and you will be asked to sign up in future. Some folks may get it straight away depending on what bucket they get tossed in. It's an eyeball sucking, marketing growth machine, and again, you are the product for sale.

I was asked to sign up right away; it said I had read stuff through them before and I know I haven't.

All the caveats about Medium noted. However, this particular still seemed to make some interesting, and for the most part, valid points. Those of us who work in the music industry, even if only on a part time basis, know enough at least to validate what the author is saying.

The question I wonder about is what new models for earning money does the new technologies for creation and distribution of music offer that weren't possible before? Even as the new technologies whittle away at the old ways of monetizing one's creations, new ways of doing so are opening up. What we probably need to ask is what are the new ways and how can we capitalize on them? There is no way to restore the old models. Sure, some will employ the old models while everything is in the transition phase, and do just fine. But, sooner or later, the new will replace the old entirely. What will things look like then? How do we prepare for that? And how do we profit from it? Those are the sorts of questions we should be asking.

Would be interested to hear what you all think.
