Thanks for the input.
Yes plugins take a certain amount of ram. Some far more than others. Disk cache is not going to affect what you have available to the system, PT, and plugins as the available cache amount is 4gb under your total for exactly that reason. If you are running vi's they will eat up your ram really fast and bog your system down.

If I remember right I was not really seeing any improvements when I unparked the cores. There is some definite improvements in this regard I would expect to see.

This is unscientific, but unparking cores seemed to add stability with iffy situations. I have the cores unparked now and will probably leave them this way.

Out of curiosity I 'unparked' the cores of my 3820 with a 'Coder Bag' utility and cant believe the improvement. Not only have I reached a higher score on a dverb test but some issues Ive been having using my UAD1 also seem to be solved. Its too early to say for sure but it's certainly improved the stability for me.

Hey Guys pricing out a system here on newegg. I should mention this will be my first build but I am fairly computer savvy and have some friends if I need help. I am considering building one because an i7 mac that I would like is just too expensive even used. My new studio computer will run PT10 with either a focusrite saffire pro 40 or a comparable 8 channel interface. Here is my build right now. The 500gb will be the system drive and the 1tb will be my recording drive. There is enough space for more drives should I need them in the future. Anyone see any potential problems with pro tools? With shipping these parts price out to $1272 ish. Anyone see anyways I could cut corners and still have good performance for a prosumer studio? question: will I need a T.I. pci firewire card or can I just use the onboard firewire?

I'm no windows guru, but don't forget the hackintosh option, if that interests you. But most if all get an SSD for your system drive (whichever OS you choose) and thank me later.
