Default WTF!!! Are my thumbs to big?

Hi,

I was wondering if anyone could tell me the optimum thumb size for pro tools 9. My thumbs seem to be getting in the way of my great music and causing a ton of latency! I don't know what the problem is. I hate AVID. My thuumbs worked really well on protools 8.04. I have googled the topic numerous times and followed all of the instructions on eHow for opposable digits but protools still makes them feel big.

I almost want to switch to logic and sue AVID! Please help me get my thumbs to where they should be to make great music with protools

Users with big thumbs are better off using SONAR.

You need to use the ATC or "automatic thumb compensation" plugin.
Insert your thumb into your rear......plugin passage and all will be good.

I have tried the ATC and it is a well know issue since protools 4 but completely new to protools 9. I think that the command focus thumb mode should be 64 bit.

Is it your right thumb or left thumb that is too big? Try using your other thumb to see if that works better. Some of us have simply stopped using our thumbs altogether in Protools 9 due to a known issue with large thumbs. Some folks have tried to use a compressor plugin to decrease the thumb size but it doesn't always work. Users of PTHD have also tried the Heat plugin with some success but it is only available in TDM format. Try looking for a wrapper for it. It might increase the buffer size however. Make sure to record to a second drive as recording to the system drive is known to cause problems with larger thumbs. It is also a good idea to delete databases and preferences if the thumbs are really large. There may be other tweaks in the General Troubleshooting thread that will help with the problem. Finally, make sure all your plugins are up to date and compatible with your thumbs. The problem may not be with Protools. You might just need to work around the thumbs. I think Logic and Cubase also are having similar problems with big thumbs.

That is great advice.. I will try some fixes and report back. Will Thunderbolt help?

Your problem is using those big knobs on the LA2A. That's where Fat Thumb Syndrome comes from. I thought everybody knew that. I have a fix, though. I'll trade you for an Alesis 3630, straight up.
