I would try do the move aside plugin files test and see if you can quickly find a problem.

Buy OTOH I would never trust a OS X migration if you moved lots of stuff that way I'd be prepared to cut my losses early, stop doing too much debugging and just reinstall everything from scratch. And along the way, whatever you do you need to check you have up to date plugins. And who knows if this is really the cause, but I would certainly suspect this as a possible problem.

On power management, I would not let the drives ever spin down, disk cache or not. Run through and check all optimizations are applied.

By 16/16 you mean you have Avid HD interfaces or Apogee 16x16?

And I did not see a UAD mentioned. Definitely try without that installed. (I'd even move aside the plugins just to
be paranoid).

Ok thanks.
16/16 is Avid.

My setup is:

OS 10.8.1
(fresh installed on OWC SSD drive and settings imported with migration)
PT10HD 10.3.0 + HDX2
(preferences deleted + disk permissions repaired)
Mac Pro 3.06ghz x 2 (12 core), 40gb ram.

It doesn't seem to be really related to the number of tracks.
I just tried to bounce a track with about 30 audio tracks. No VI's.

Play back engine was set to:
512 samples, 11 processors (of 24), cpu limit: 85%, 256 voices, delay comp: max, cache size: 4gb, plugin buffer: level 2.

It stopped during the bounce.
I changed the buffer to a maximum 1024 and it got through.

But this can't be right... the fastest setup I could get my hands on and then this...

I had similar problems yesterday with about 5 tracks and recording a cue vocal...

Any ideas?

Boe
Do you have trim enabled for the SSD? https://gist.github.com/3334193 (you should google this as well to double check terminal command.)

No - Trim is not turned on.
My OWC 3G SSD drive does not support Trim, and I formatted with Disk Util.

I would definitely leave the CPUs left at one less than the physical cores until you are stable (12-1 = 11)

You have fully optimized your system right? e.g. Disabled power management? What drive (make/model/specs) are you recording audio to?

I have no experience with HDX but I would suspect your RTAS and AAX native plugins here. Take all your plugins out of Pro Tools (physically move aside all the plugins in the plugin folders (remember RTAS and AAX live in different places). Start Pro Tools and see if the the problem goes away, if it has gone away reintroduce some of the plugins (starting with standard Avid ones) and see when it comes back. Check your plugins are up to date, I would be suspect this more if you did not do a uninstall (with clean option) before a PT 10 full install. I don't just care about the plugins you were using, but all of them in the plugin folders.

Darryl
Hey again Darryl

Just to recap...

From where I am now I will do this:

1. Uninstall protools
2. Delete all RTAS + AAX plugs
3. Install protools
4. Install all plugins

ok?

All other apps and settings on my system drive are migrated, but thats not of our concern, right?

Note: OS 10.8.1 has been installed on the clean SSD.

New status:

Deleted protools and all plugs clean.

Installed PT 10.3.0 from scratch. ONLY Avid plugs.

Rapaired disk permissons.

Launched protools.

Get the same -9171 errors.

Was able to strip the current session down to 1 mono track with no plugs and get the samme error when recording.

With these audio setting: HW buffer: 512, 11 processors, CPU limit 85, 256 voices, no delay comp, cache normal.

Same thing with cache 2gb.
Happens a bit less with buffer at 1024, but still a lot.

SO - I create a new blank session with one mono track. Same settings - and the errors don't come anymore.

ODD.

Don't quite know what to make of it.

Will test more.

Hey Brandon

PCI1 - ATI Radeon HD 5770 (screencard)
PCI2 - HDX
PCI3 - HDX
PCI4 - UAD

No, did not take the UAD card out. Should I try that?

Thanks,
Boe
