Default Why Oh \"Y\" -- Snap to Start TC-- DOH!

I wish that we could disable/enable the "Y" key. I can't tell you how many times I inadvertently hit it while trying to zoom in quickly with the"T" key. It really can break your work flow when your selected audio jumps to the start of your session (assuming you don't have incoming TC). Then you have to hit undo the amount of times as you hit "Y". I was wondering if any other users feel the same way and wish for a way to enable that function when needed (for me it's very rarely).

Absolutely. I've never once used the "Y" key for it's intended purpose, but I can't tell you how many times I've accidentally launched a region to the beginning of the timeline while trying to zoom in using "T". I've even done it and not realized until way later. I've even had someone else catch it before I realized what happened. That's embarrassing.

This is something I would love to see disabled.

My issue's in the other direction. The E or "Zoom Toggle" key gives me fits.

I have thrown keyboards.

You can use QuicKeys.
You can create a "Type KeyStroke" action, in QuicKeys lingo, to "tech" Protools that each time you press the letter "Y" ProTools undertand you have pressed "O", for instance. With the letter "O" Protools doesn't do a thing.

Not true. If you've unlinked timeline and edit selections "O" copies one to the other and "0" is vice versa (not on PT right now, forget which one is which). Very useful though.

But back to the main thread, I don't even understand what Digi had in mind with "Y".

What I really need is a focus key shortcut for showing/hiding region names in the edit window. When I switch all tracks to small or mini height, region names make it impossible to edit easily.

Hey Digi, how about it? Change "Y" to display/undisplay region names?

Best,

Im not sure, but I think you can set this up using the keyboard control panel in system preferences. You can set up custom keyboard shortcuts for applications that will trigger a menu option.

I think in PT 7, "show names" is under the "track" menu. I'm not near my PT system at the moment, or else I would give it a try.

Give it a shot and let us know if that worked.

Oh yeah, I hate the "Y" key for the same reasons already stated.

(this function is a reclict from the stone-ages when people were spottig regions to external tapes instead of QT. probably totally obsolete.)
