Invert Automation data (Feature request?)
Hi all!
I thought it would be useful, both for creative or routine purposes, to be able to invert automation data on a track. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think Pro Tools can't do this... Inverting automation data would be straightforward for "on-off" parameters and quite easy to implement for "linear" parameters: inverted value = value-(2*(value-center)) where center = (min+max)/2 (could be adjustable) For "log scaled" parameters, such as volume, one would have to choose a center value around which to mirror the data... Bye! (Hope somebody hears me!) Any other ideas? |

That's an interesting idea! Perhaps I am just fuzzy this morning, I cannot think when this feature would actually get used. What do you have in mind?
(I DO think it is a good idea though!)

Re: Invert Automation data (Feature request?)
I'd use it for pan automation that's for sure. A lot of times I'll have a stereo effect that I start mono in the centre and spread it out or vice versus, wide stereo that narrows to mono centre. The pan info is exactly the same for both tracks just inverted on one.
Cool idea. JR

Re: Invert Automation data (Feature request?)
Counterpoint rhythm volumes, pans as mentioned. layered voices with inverted eq automation...
P.S. For these effect I've been copying* the written lane and paste / offsetting to the counter lane. Not as clean or exact as the inverted method. (If using the pencil and grid automation the results are quite good) *For music, try a one band eq, automate the frequency to a boost of 10db, narrow bandwidth. {grid set to eighth notes and the Triangle pencil} Paste left channel into the right channel (Paste special) offset by 1/8 note. Result: Left / right filter pan effect. (alter to taste) (Just did this to a stereo drum track to add a bit of flavor) |
