Btw, that engineer was right.

I recently saw a giant neotek for sale CHEAP. Had no idea how they sound though. I want to say it was like 5 grand.

There's a few potentially interesting desks in there frankly.

Since you seem to be looking more for some vintage "vibe" than an elaborate mixing tool, the Quad 8 would be a nice one obviously, the MCI's might be too. The way the desk has been maintained is really critical here...

Why not save up some more and get an SSL4040 for like 28/-30K-ish dollars as those old MCI ones are a mess to keep running and you need to budget atleast 2000-4000 dollars a year in maintainance for one of the better consoles.

Never heard of the Coronado and can't advice on that sound but you cant go wrong wirh an SSL or NEVE or a Soundtracs Jade - S. We had the 48 channel Jade S and we loved it dearly until we got the "real thing"

So .. if you can muster up for that the Quad 8 (28K) then you should 100% get a SSL desk for around 30K and then you have what everyone is chasing with software i.e. analog warmth and super phat sound on the whole curve.

There are some other options worth looking into, such as:
Neve Genesys Black
Audient Heritage
SSL XL
and I agree that a used Neotek is an option, as is a used Amek(always a handful on eBay)

I agree with Chris, but this is why I mentioned A&H.

If your going to go big, go to the bank and get some funds......

1608 is a great one for sure....

I don't know what the Rupert 5088 consoles go for but those are probably more expensive

The 1608 is the eventual goal, but here is my thinking:
8 more lindel preamps at 329 each
14 more EQ's at 329 each
2 10 slot chasis at 400 each
1 6 slot chasis at 300
cables maybe 200ish
that's $8,538 to complete the basic 16 channels. and that's doing it the absolutely cheapest way. even more if i went to 24 channels. So that is the same amount of cash as one of the other boards on that website (some of them). Then there is the new versus used aspect. it's a lot to think about. I have tried looking for 500 series stuff used, but either nobody is selling it, or they are selling it for almost the same price they bought it for when its x years old which is crazy so I just buy new for the small difference on each module.

Default Recording Consoles

The thing with a desk is to think long and hard if it's gonna be used as business differenciation/marketing tool or only as a (usually personnal) production tool. This will help evaluate all the associated costs.

The first console I ever worked on was a Quad 8 Coronado way back in 1980. It was an excellent sounding board, great mic pre's but no Dynamics section. The buttons get dirty and you have to clean them regularly. Also the AM10 circuit on each channel goes out with the heat and also the caps need to be replaced or upgraded. Save up and buy something more modern. It will be worth it in the long run.
