Default Re: daisy-chaining FW HD

Since my MBP has only the single FW 800 port, I mount the Glyph drive, and then connect my 003R to the drive. At some point this year, I plan to replace the 003R with a Metric Halo LIO-8.

Seems like it would make sense to take advantage of the express card slot, since I could then use that to mount the drive, and a 9- to 6-pin FW cable to connect the 003R (and then the LIO).

Are you having throughput issues by daisy chaining? A fire hose will full up a cup of water faster than a regular faucet, but...

Who, me?

I have no issues.

(Well, that's not really true; I have all sorts of issues, but none having to do with throughput. )

On my MBP, I only record live classical stuff, rarely using more than 6 mics and never using plugins, and I have really never run into any problems with PT9, nor did I with PT8.

I will say this, though: On my Mac Pro — actually my old one, not the current one — my 003R did NOT like to share the FW bus with anything else at all. I wound up installing a couple of Sonnet PCIe cards to give me more FW ports for external drives, a Liquid Mix, etc.

Haven't run into this with either of my current machines, Mac and MBP. But it does seem like it would be more efficient to use separate resources for the interface and drive than to daisy-chain them. I have no scientific basis for that, but it sounds good…

Anyway, my wife hates those cups and it was time for a new set of glassware anyway.
