Default What do you think of this concept?

Anybody using the 4-zone compressor from Roger Nichols called Dynam-izer? From their website:

"Don't get confused - this is not multi-band compression. DYNAM-IZER is an entirely different beast. Why always apply the same compression to all audio levels? Compress the louder levels with a quick attack; expand the lower levels with a slow release and leave the mid level sounds alone. Try it with a traditional compressor - you won't get far. DYNAM-IZER lets you break your audio levels up into "zones" so you can control them exactly how you want. No one size fits all compression here."

Seems like a well thought out and unique tool, especially on a vocal track. Check out the tutorial movie here. Any user comments? Any similar/competing plugs? Thanx.

It's a very cool and useful tool.

Waves' VolumeMAXX is it's distant cousin, also very useful.

Also, somewhere between the two (Dynam-izer and MAXXvolume) there’s GRM-Tools’ “Contrast.”

When it comes to dynamic processes, it’s clear that the advent of digital audio has brought forth powerful new tools which were simply impossible to create in the analog domain. Collectively, all this allows us to perform successful interventions on material which might have been considered “beyond repair/improvement” in the past. Some of these tools require “different thinking” because they are themselves based on concepts that deviate from long-established norms. Exciting times indeed!

IHTH.

Roger Nichols Plugs seem to be RTAS only???

I wonder if he feels that the 32bit floating point sounds better than TDM???

TDM versions have been in the works for a while, it seems. Nowadays, there are way more native plugin users than TDM users, so that development cycle makes sense. I've found all RND plugins to be pretty nice. They pretty much all take a bread-and-butter category and put a little twist on it. Free-qualizer is also neat. They're worth it, much more than yet another emulation of some old dusty box.

Anybody used Dynam-izer on a vocal? When needed, I edit a lead vocal to create separate low-med-high volume tracks. I process each separately, then buss them for shared processing. I'm hoping Dynam-izer will do some of this for me. Using it as a mastering processor looks interesting, too. Any Dynam-izer user tips? How well does it work at the zone level thresholds? Thanx.
