Default Help - Problems in Pro Tools 12

Hello,
yesterday I purchased PT12 for one month.

1) The audio in the demo session runs. But when I try to play an imported midi file the program tells me "Pro Tools could not initialize the Focusrite USB 2.0 Audio Driver. Please make sure that the device has been configured correctly." I'm sure that my device is configured correctly because every other application with audio runs without problems.

2) When I open "Playback Engine" in the Setup menu, I get the message "AAE error -6001 was encountered". I add a screenshot of the I/O Setup. I guess that everything is notified correctly.

3) There is no midi signal.

4) I don't know why, but I don't get any response at nearly every action.

I hope someone can help as soon as possible because I purchased PT only for one month!

Thank you!

My audiointerfaces are:
Focusrite Scarlett 6i6
Native Instruments Komplete Audio 6
I'm not sure which one is the best for PT.

This drive is NOT suitable for recording or sample libraries. I am not a fan of integrated graphics, but that may be fine these days(was bad several years ago). Last suggestion; if you have Windows set to use the Focusrite as the default sound card, change that so Windows uses the onboard sound card:
Audio Gerät : Gigabyte Panther Point High Definition Audio Controller\
this way, the Focsurite is only used by Pro Tools, avoiding any hardware conflicts.

Thank you for your answer.

I want to use the Focusrite for other things, too.
Or do you mean I should use the Focusrite for Pro Tools and the Komplete Audio 6 for other things?
Do you know which one is better for Pro Tools?

Pegasus200,

Focusrite is apparently still working on drivers for their 6i6 that work properly with Pro Tools on PCs. Here's a workaround you can try that might enable you to use it (as long as you don't care about setting/changing buffer sizes).

Here’s my current understanding of how PCs with PT12 (11?) handle audio interfaces and a new procedure that can be used to avoid some of the associated problems. Please let me know if you think something is not correct and/or if the procedure does or doesn’t work properly for you.

1. When PT starts, it assumes that the interface, I/O settings, sample rate, and buffer size used last will be used again. However, if an AVID interface is available, it may default to that instead.

2. When existing PT sessions are opened directly, problems can occur if:
a. The interface is not available
b. The interface is available but its sample rate does not match that last used by PT
3. The easiest way to avoid such problems is to open PT while holding the “N” key for the duration of its initial “boot” splash screen
a. That will enable the selection of either the “Windows Audio Device” (PT12 only) or any of the connected ASIO devices by creating a new session (just using and over-writing the default “untitled” session is likely easiest and cleanest). The PT12 menu also allows the selection of any of the custom I/O settings that you have saved for that interface.
b. With some (ASIO4ALL, Fast Track Duo, Eleven Rack, Echo AUDIOFIRE4, etc.?) but not all (Windows Audio Device, Scarlett 6i6 Beta, Roland Studio Capture, etc.?) interfaces the PT menu will enable the sample rate and buffer size to be set successfully
c. Setting the sample rate with the interface control panel prior to step 3 is an approach that seems to work well for all ASIO devices
d. Setting the buffer size before step 3 also works with some of them, but it should be checked and adjusted if necessary
e. After closing the session, PT is ready to open or create any session with the new interface, sample rate, and I/O settings.
f. PT’s sample rate (ctrl+2) and H/W Buffer Size (Setup – P) should be checked to ensure that they agree with those displayed on interface control panel
4. ASIO4ALL is quite useful because
a. PT will automatically default to it if no other interfaces are available (unless the “Windows Audio Device was the last one used)
b. PT will automatically set its sample rate when directly opening sessions with any sample rate that is supported by the computer’s resident audio device (my desktop supports all of the common ones between 44.1 and 192 kHz at bit depths of either 16 or 24 bits with up to 7 output channels)
c. No extra interface is required
d. The quality can be quite high if the computer’s default audio “enhancements” are turned off
e. Its free at http://www.asio4all.com/

Thank you for your detailed help.

1. This can't be because I don't have any Avid interface.

2. Sometimes I open an existing PT session called "test" where is nothing inside than one track to try out if it's working. Everytime the interface is surely available. But it can be that the sample rate does not match to the sample rate which is set in PT. I tried this out. I set the sample rate in the control panel to the same in the PT session to 48.000 kHz, but stiil the same problems occur.

3. I pressed the "N" key while starting PT like you said and I set it to the Focusrite. Nothing happens.

4. Earlier I also used ASIO4ALL (it's great), but I want to use the inputs (and outputs) of my interface.

Maybe you would have an idea to avoid the "no response"?

Thank you,
Pegasus200

It doesn't matter if you have an AVID device or not, the process should work anyway. Do you have the latest "Mix Control" driver installed - http://us.focusrite.com/downloads?product=Scarlett+6i6? Is your default Windows Playback Device set to your computer's speakers? Did you connect, turn on the 6i6, and set its sample rate in the Mix Control panel before starting Pro Tools? You may also need to set it's buffer size to 1ms via the control panel settings tab before starting Pro Tools.

Don't use ASIO4ALL, it is for sound cards that do not have their own ASIO drivers (the Focusrite does).

Here's a good KB article about setting the buffer settings on the Focusrite so it works properly with Pro Tools:http://www.sweetwater.com/sweetcare/...-interface-pc/

I'd also try using the latest beta driver for the 6i6 and mixcontrol.

Also, be sure to go through the Optimization Guide. If all that doesn't help, we can diagnose further.

When I set the sample rate to 44.1 kHz and when I open a new session, where the sample rate matches, there is everything working.

But when I try to set the sample rate to 48 kHz, which I usually do, the same error messages are shown. When I start MixControl in PT, 44.1 kHz is shown again. I guess that MixControl rearranges automatically.

Sometimes when I try to change the sample rate in MixControl, the message is shown for which I made a screenshot.

Joel,

If the buffer size is set with that approach, PT will not record the first 1.67ms, 7ms, 17.65ms, or likely >35ms with buffer PT H/W Buffer sizes set at 128, 256, 512, and 1024 samples respectively at a 96 kHz sample rate - see the attachment! That's likely one of the primary reasons that Focusrite is working on the Beta driver - which does it properly at least at the default 256 sample buffer size.

How can I setup the midi signal? I'm totally sure my midi-keyboard is connected to the Focusrite, but there is no midi signal coming in when I use PT.
