Ok, given in and uninstalled.

My Mac Pro 2013 8 core (yeah not the newest fanciest machine but generally still perfectly adequate) was running hot all morning, fan going like mad. I thought "oh well, just a maxed out session pushing Pro Tools". Looked in Activity Monitor and it was actually the Avid App Manager Helper that was caning the system, heavily using four cores. Uninstalled it and Mac fan has dropped to half speed and is a lot cooler. This is completely crazy, somebody at Avid needs to start looking at this.
