Default Controlling Soft Synths with digi002 Knobs

I always assumed you could do this but I've never tried this before: Is there a way to generate MIDI controller messages using the eight data knobs on my digi002 so that I can control parameters on a RTAS soft synth? How exactly would you do that?

Thanks.
