Using MIDI without Mbox2 Pro Tools 9

Hello

I have this Midi interface http://www.roland.com/products/en/UM-1EX/ My MIDI keyboard is a cheap one and it came with the RockBand 3 game that goes with my XBOX. Is there anyway to get it to work with Pro Tools 9 without using the Mbox2? I have tried just plugging the MIDI out cable into the Keyboard and plugging the USB in but it doesn't connect to Pro Tools 9 unless I plug the MIDI In cable into the Mbox2.
